Diagnostics

Today’s vehicle use complex computer systems to enhance their efficiency and provide state of the art features. Modern vehicles also have an on-board diagnostic (OBD) system, which continually monitors all engine and emissions systems and performance. Something as simple as a change in air temperature or humidity will cause your OBD to adjust your engine to maintain peak performance and efficiency. When your OBD system notices a problem, it turns on a warning light or message. The check engine light will illuminate or “Service Engine Soon” will be displayed in your instrument cluster to let you know that there is an issue that needs to be addressed. If either one of these come on it is recommended that you get your vehicle checked out within a few days. Generally you are alright to drive your car long enough to schedule service with us unless the light is flashing which means it should be attended to as soon as possible.

Normally a more serious issue like oil pressure, overheating, or such will cause other warning lights to illuminate or flash. Bring your vehicle into Van Loo’s Auto Service and we will attach our diagnostic equipment, extract the trouble code(s) which in turn will direct us to the system in question so we can properly diagnose what is causing the problem. Sometimes it’s as simple as a loose gas cap but most often it is some other malfunction that we can repair.
